New Jersey Booking Releases Quick Facts
New Jersey Booking Releases Through State Systems
The New Jersey Department of Corrections runs a statewide Offender Search tool. It covers all inmates in state custody. The purpose of this tool is to promote public safety while giving the community access to selected offender information. The NJDOC updates this data on a biweekly basis. Search results show the inmate's name, age, sentence details, and facility location. This system tracks offenders from booking through release.
Offenders on work release, furlough, or in a residential community program are still visible in the system. Their profiles may not show the true current location or release date. The records of offenders who have been paroled are not updated after they leave custody. So no one should assume that a person listed as paroled remains under active parole supervision. Certain offenders may be excluded from the site at the discretion of the Department of Corrections and other law enforcement agencies in New Jersey.
Effective August 4, 2012, an offender is removed from the search page one year after the completion of their custodial term. Offenders sentenced to Community Supervision for Life or Parole Supervision for Life will not be removed because their term does not have a completion date. Questions about offender information must be addressed in writing to the State of New Jersey, Department of Corrections, PO Box 863, ATTN: Correspondence Unit, Trenton, NJ 08625.
County Jail Booking Releases in New Jersey
Each of New Jersey's 21 counties operates its own jail or corrections facility. These jails process bookings for all arrests made in the county. Most counties provide an online inmate lookup tool so the public can search current inmates by name or booking number. Some counties use the BluHorse or IML platform for their lookup systems. Others have built their own search tools on the county website.
County booking releases contain specific details about each arrest. Records typically include the inmate's name, booking number, date of birth, charges, bond amount, and housing location. Some systems also show booking photographs. When a person is released from a county jail, the release is logged with the date, time, and type of release. Release types include bail, sentence completion, court order, transfer to state prison, or case dismissal. Released inmates may remain in the search system for a limited time after their release from a New Jersey county facility.
New Jersey county jails are run by the sheriff's office in most counties. The sheriff handles both law enforcement and corrections. In some places, a separate corrections department runs the facility under the county government. Either way, booking release records are public under the New Jersey Open Public Records Act.
Note: For inmates transferred to state prison, use the NJDOC Offender Search rather than the county lookup tool.
How to Request Booking Releases Under OPRA
The Open Public Records Act (OPRA) governs public access to government records in New Jersey. This law replaced the old Right to Know Law. It is compiled as N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 et seq. Under OPRA, anyone can request booking release records from a county jail or state agency. You do not need to explain why you want the records.
Under N.J.S.A. 47:1A-3(b), specific arrest information is available to the public when an arrest is made. This includes the defendant's name, age, residence, occupation, and marital status. It also covers the text of any charges, identity of the arresting personnel and agency, circumstances of the arrest including time and place, and information about bail. These details are part of every booking release record in New Jersey.
A custodian must respond to an OPRA request within seven business days. They can grant access, deny access, seek clarification, or request more time. Paper copies cost $0.05 per letter size page and $0.07 per legal size page. Records sent by email or fax are free of charge. The NJ OPRA Portal lets you submit requests to any of 1,250 or more government agencies across the state. It covers all 21 counties and 565 municipalities.
If your request is denied, you can challenge the decision by filing a complaint with the Government Records Council at (866) 850-0511 or by going to Superior Court. The GRC is at 101 S. Broad Street, P.O. Box 819, Trenton, NJ 08625-0819.
New Jersey Court Records and Booking Releases
After a booking, criminal cases move through the court system. The PROMIS/Gavel Public Access system tracks indictable criminal cases from arrest through every stage including appeals. Only defendants with a case on which they were convicted and sentenced in Superior Court will show up in search results. You can search by defendant name, indictment number, or complaint number.
The Municipal Court Case Search handles traffic violations, disorderly persons offenses, and municipal ordinance violations. This free system shows case status, court dates, fine amounts, and payment information. No password is needed to search. These tools let you track what happens after a booking in New Jersey.
For judgment records, the NJ Courts provide a separate Judgment Record Search. It covers criminal judgments dating back to June 30, 2017. You can search by name, judgment number, or docket number. Results display the judgment date, amount, status, and satisfaction information for each case in New Jersey.

Tips for Searching New Jersey Booking Releases
Start with the county where the arrest took place. Most county jails have a free online inmate lookup. Try the sheriff's office website first. If the person has been moved to state prison, switch to the NJDOC Offender Search tool. For older records or released inmates, file an OPRA request with the county or use the NJ OPRA Portal.
When filing an OPRA request for booking releases, be specific about what you want. Include the person's full name and approximate dates. The NJ Department of Law and Public Safety accepts OPRA requests by mail or in person. They will not accept requests by fax or email unless sent to an official OPRA email address. Requests with estimated fees over $25 may need a 50% deposit. Anonymous requests require a 100% deposit when permitted under New Jersey law.
Keep these points in mind when searching booking releases in New Jersey:
- County inmate lookups show current inmates and recent releases
- The NJDOC search covers state prison inmates only
- OPRA requests must be in writing, not verbal
- Custodians have 7 business days to respond
- Email and fax copies are free under OPRA
